Once largely farmland, the Natomas area north of downtown is home to the arena for the Sacramento Kings professional basketball team and some 40,000-plus residents.
With the Sacramento River on the west and the American River on the south, Natomas homes range from riverside residences to apartments and townhouses as well as gated communities.
The area is generally considered in two parts: South Natomas, which is fully developed, and North Natomas, which is expected to be one of the faster growing areas in the region. Planners predict North Natomas, which is north of Interstate 80 and along Interstate 5, to have 66,000 residences by the time it is fully built out.
The Natomas area is close to downtown Sacramento and to Sacramento International Airport, just to its northwest on Interstate 5.
Shopping is handy at malls along Interstate 80 and in downtown Sacramento, which also offers a full range of cultural and entertainment possibilities. River-based recreation, including fishing and boating, is readily available. The community also includes the western end of the 23-mile long American River Parkway, which offers biking, walking, picnicking and swimming activities.
